UNCOMMON A pre-Fall attempt to create living seismic stations and seabed gardeners. The Fall, as it does, deleted the 'monitoring' and 'stabilizing' parts of the programming, leaving only the 'massive,' 'territorial,' and 'tremor-causing' bits fully operational.

Special Ability

◈ Seismic Symbiosis

Its bacterial colonies are tiny, ruthless geopoliticians. They wage constant microbial war to monopolize mineral resources, while also acting as a biological seismograph network, letting the Sunfish feel the planet's heartbeat and scream back into it.

HabitatIt haunts the crushing blackness of ocean trenches and abyssal plains, preferring real estate with a view of the planet's grinding, molten guts. Follow the earthquakes and mineral plumes; you'll find them there, holding court.
DietIts primary sustenance is a buffet of dissolved minerals and geothermal waste heat, processed by its glowing bacterial boarders. For a bit of roughage, it will occasionally and indifferently inhale whatever smaller life gets caught in its ponderous drift.
BehaviorIt moves with the majestic torpor of a drifting island. It is profoundly, pathologically possessive of its patch of barren seabed, using deep-earth grumbles to tell rivals to fuck off. They gather in solemn congregations near faults to engage in slow-motion shoving matches that last for weeks.

Field Notes

Behold the Tectonic Sunfish, a geological error wearing flesh. It drifts in the dark like a misplaced continent, its hide a convincing forgery of sedimentary rock, lit from within by the patient, photosynthetic glow of its bacterial tenants. They are the real architects here, turning heat and stone into life while the fish itself is just the floating real estate.

Do not mistake its lethargy for weakness. When annoyed, it flexes, and the deep ocean floor shudders in sympathy. That low, grinding pulse isn't just a warning; it's a localized tremor that can bury you in a sudden cascade of silt. Its primary defense is, quite literally, causing an avalanche on top of you. A marvel of disproportionate response.

It doesn't just live near fault lines; it becomes one.

Bacterial symbionts use a type VI secretion system to eliminate competitors in their natural host — Peer-reviewed work (2018) “Bacterial symbionts use a type VI secretion system to eliminate competitors in their natural host”. published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Abstract excerpt: strains, we found "lethal" and "nonlethal" isolates that could kill or not kill the well-studied light-organ isolate ES114, respectively. The killing phenotype of these lethal strains…
