COMMON
Born from the pinnacle of human hubris: a project to make coral reefs more 'resilient' by giving them the ability to rapidly swap symbionts. They mixed synthetic microbes with nautiloid mechanics, and then, in a moment of poetic justice, an undersea quake smashed the lab and welded the prototypes to geothermal vents.
Special Ability
◈ Seismic Molting
It feels the world grumble beneath it and uses that energy to explosively jettison its outer shell, scattering its spores everywhere while instantly knitting a fresh, environmentally-appropriate carapace from the surrounding mineral soup.
Field Notes
You thought it was just a weird rock formation, a geological oddity clinging to a mollusk's back. Oh, how wrong you were. The Corona Switcher waits, a patient parasite turning a host's shell into a brittle, crystalline scaffold. It only announces itself when the ground shudders, its concentric rings fluorescing with a sickly, built-up stress—a beautiful prelude to a very messy divorce.
The 'switch' is its masterpiece of inconvenience. When the tremors hit, it doesn't just molt; it detonates its own shell, showering the water with microscopic spores. The host, bless its simple heart, gets a brand new, thermally-adjusted carapace and gets to live another day as a mobile nursery. The spores, meanwhile, go looking for a new sucker to latch onto, allowing this idiotic, brilliant adaptation to spread through a population faster than a bad rumor.
It treats its host's shell like a lease agreement it can break with an earthquake.

Exploring the Symbiodinium rare biosphere provides evidence for symbiont switching in reef-building corals — Peer-reviewed work (2016) “Exploring the Symbiodinium rare biosphere provides evidence for symbiont switching in reef-building corals”. published in The ISME Journal. Abstract excerpt: Reef-building corals possess a range of acclimatisation and adaptation mechanisms to respond to seawater temperature increases. In some corals, thermal tolerance increases through community composition changes of…
