At 9:15 a.m., the sky over Friendship, Wisconsin is a solid, flat gray. The Adams County Courthouse sits on its broad lawn at 402 Main Street, a nearly cubic brick building in Neoclassical dress. Its dominant feature is a shallow limestone portico, supported by four colossal Doric pilasters, bearing the inscription “Adams County” in the pediment. It’s the visual anchor of the village. Joe stands at the base of the stone steps with a clipboard. I’m calibrating the handheld infrasound meter.

The courthouse was completed in 1914. In 1913, voters in Friendship approved a $30,000 bond issue for its construction, 127 to 58. The rival village of Adams opposed it. The old wooden courthouse was torn down that same year. Arthur Peabody, Wisconsin’s first State Architect, designed it; George Kieke built it. I initiate continuous recording on all sensors. Joe runs a finger along a seam in the plaster crown molding.

JOE No cracks. No thermal stress I can see. This plaster is probably original. Solid.

JUPITER Readings are steady. Waiting.

At 10:47 a.m. exactly, a localized visual distortion appears in the center of the courtroom.
