We came because Mr. Davenport read something online about old structures and unusual vibrations. He didn’t say which website. I didn’t ask. By now, I’ve stopped trying to fact-check the internet rabbit holes he dives into. This time, the bridge presented a technical puzzle.

Walter’s Mill Bridge is a sixty-foot Burr arch truss. While some sources cite an 1859 date, the National Register nomination records its construction as 1830. It was originally built to cross Coxes Creek four miles south of Somerset. It was moved to the Somerset Historical Center in the early 1960s to save it from demolition, and now it spans Haupt’s Run. It was restored in 1986, with laminated wood arches reinforcing the original framework. It’s one of ten covered bridges left in the county, a preserved piece of 19th-century agricultural transportation, listed on the National Register. JOE

I finished the calibration. The bridge interior was a tunnel of vertical plank siding and heavy timber trusses. The tin roof overhead was a dull silver. I activated the laser. A crisp red beam shot out, striking the roof near the apex and reflecting a soft dot onto the floorboards.

Then the dot flickered. It didn’t shimmer—it wavered, like a heat mirage, before snapping back to a point.

JUPITER
Huh.

JOE
What?

JUPITER
The laser. It glitched for a second.

I shook the device, checked the battery contacts. No error lights. Cletus had stopped chewing her stick. She was watching the far end of the bridge, ears perked.

I stood and carried the tripod inside. Mr. Davenport was crouched beneath the central truss, peering up at the joinery. Cletus padded in after me, sniffing the base of a plank near the opposite wall. She whined, softly.

JOE

JOE

The laser beam, still active, now traveled from my tripod to the far wall. But the point of light danced and jumped erratically across the surface before the device emitted a sharp beep and the beam cut out entirely.

JUPITER
It’s malfunctioning.

JOE
It’s picking up something.

JUPITER
It’s a faulty laser.

A low hum began, not in my ears but in my bones. It pulsed, a deep, subsonic vibration I felt in my teeth. I counted the seconds between pulses. Seventeen. Exactly.

Mr. Davenport was already moving. He’d spotted a small, rusty access ladder bolted to one truss, leading up to a narrow gap between the roof and the top chord.

JOE
I’m checking the roof lining.

JUPITER
That ladder looks a hundred years old.

JOE
Then it’s period-accurate.

He climbed. The hum pulsed again. The light inside the bridge didn’t dim because of clouds—the overcast sky hadn’t changed. But the shadows felt deeper, an illusion of contrast in the uniform grey light.

Cletus backed out of the bridge and sat in the grass, her body tense, staring at the entrance.

Mr. Davenport’s flashlight beam swept across the underside of the tin roof from inside the cavity.

JOE
Jupiter.

JUPITER
What do you see?

JOE
The tin… it’s got a pattern. Fine cracks. Old ones.

JUPITER
Thermal expansion. Aging.

JOE
Maybe.

He fell silent. I heard the soft scrape of his fingers on metal. The hum pulsed. The dead laser in my hand felt inert.

JOE
They’re just cracks. Static.

His voice was flat. Concentrated.

A loud, dry crack echoed through the bridge, a sound of timber settling. It wasn’t a break. It was the normal sound of an old wooden structure.

JUPITER
Mr. Davenport. Come down. Now.

He descended quickly. His face was pale in the gloom. He held his notebook, his fingers tight on the pencil.

JOE
Nothing shifted. I heard it. But nothing moved.

JUPITER
How much?

JOE
Nothing. Zero degrees.

I toggled the laser's switch. Nothing.

The hum pulsed again. The vibration this time was strong enough to make my ears pop. Cletus, outside, let out a short, sharp bark and circled twice in the grass before lying down, her head on her paws, eyes wide.

JOE
We should take a wood sample. From one of the original trusses.

JUPITER
No. It’s a historic structure. We don’t touch it.

He looked at me, then at his notebook, then at the bridge. The hum was fading. The light seemed normal. The walls looked straight.

JOE
It’s not ghosts.

JUPITER
I know.

JOE
It’s just an old bridge. Wood creaks. Lasers fail.

He said it like a conclusion. I looked at my dead laser, at the perfectly normal-looking bridge, at Cletus who refused to come back inside.

JUPITER

But I had seen a tool fail in a strange way. And for a few minutes, in that quiet space, it was easy to feel like the structure itself was the source of the mystery, instead of a coincidence of faulty equipment, animal behavior, and the power of suggestion.
