Ghost Crusade X-Treme: The Sign That Marks Its Bearer

By Jupiter Meteor Nguyen Internship Documentation – Published by Joe Davenport Sr.

We were there because Mr. Davenport read on the internet about some strings phenomenon happening—something about alignment and light in old buildings. I didn’t believe it. But the church doors unlocked before we touched them.

Shaffer Chapel A. M. E. Church sits at the southeast corner of Highland Avenue and Wolfe Street in Muncie’s Whitely neighborhood. The congregation organized in 1919 under Reverend J. P. Q. Wallace. By 1929, they had moved to the current location at 1501 East Highland Avenue. The building’s original construction date is cited as circa 1893, though the claim it was originally a public school is unverified. It’s a one-story gable-front structure with a raised basement, clad in gray vinyl siding, with a two-story tower and a jerkinhead gable roof. In 2022, six modern stained-glass windows were installed—three on the west façade, three on the east.

We arrived in late afternoon. The sun was low in the west.

I knelt by my equipment case in the narthex, powering up a polarized lens array. Mr. Davenport stood just inside the main doors. Cletus sat beside him, tail thumping the floor.

JOE Check the windows. The 2022 stained glass. I read online—when the light hits just right, the reflections align into something that wasn’t designed.

JUPITER A pattern in the light. That’s physics. Not proof of intent.

JOE My Time-Life book has a whole chapter on sacred geometry and light traps. Replacement glass in old buildings can develop… echoes.

I calibrated the tablet. According to oral histories, the church served as a staging area during the aftermath of the 1930 Marion lynching. Reverend John E. Johnson transported the bodies of Abram Smith and Thomas Shipp to Muncie for embalming.

Cletus stiffened, ears forward, and turned her head toward my case.

A small cloud of dark smoke rose from the floorboards beside it. It smelled of hot metal and burnt cinnamon.

BEELZEBUBBA Internship documentation. How adorably mortal.

He stepped out of the smoke, brushing ash from the sleeve of his striped suit. Cletus stared, then stepped forward and planted a paw firmly on his pointed shoe.

BEELZEBUBBA Unhand the footwear, hound.

Mr. Davenport turned toward Cletus.

JOE Jupiter? You drop something?

JUPITER No. There’s… smoke.

JOE Probably dust in the sunlight. The 1975 additions used concrete block—different materials settle, kick up particulate.

Cletus sniffed Beelzebubba’s trouser cuff. He jerked his foot free with a huff and walked toward the nave. Cletus watched him go, then whined and followed.

BEELZEBUBBA Meteor. A name that expects an impact. Does it?

He didn’t look back.

Mr. Davenport walked down the center aisle. I followed with my lens array. Cletus trotted behind. Beelzebubba walked several paces ahead, adjusting his feathered hat. The late sun hit the new stained-glass panes, casting colored fragments across the pews.

The building has a stair-step elevation due to the sloped site. The 1975 additions sit lower than the original structure. I began measuring sight lines.

JOE Look from here. Center aisle.

From the exact center, the reflections from the six windows aligned. Fragments of blue, red, and amber locked into a coherent shape in the air—a three-lobed symbol, like a twisted trefoil. It hovered for a second, then slid across the floor, up the pew, and onto the cover of the old paranormal book Mr. Davenport held open.

JUPITER It migrated. Via reflected light.

JOE It’s on the book. That’s… not in the chapter.

My occupancy counter pinged softly. It registered one additional thermal signature in the building. Not an intruder. Just… present.

A deep metallic clunk echoed from the east side. Then another from the west.

JUPITER Doors. Unlatching.

I checked the tablet’s schematic. The east steel door. The basement west door. The basement east door. In sequence.

Beelzebubba stood near the rear pews, arms folded, watching. Cletus whined softly and turned her head toward the basement windows set into the concrete block.

In the dark glass, a tall, motionless silhouette was reflected. It had no detail, only an elongated humanoid outline. It stood in the basement, looking up. There was no corresponding figure in the physical space behind us.

The silhouette in the reflection inclined its head slightly.

All the doors began to swing slowly inward, then stopped, held open by their own weight.

BEELZEBUBBA Process complete. How efficient.

He turned and walked toward the narthex.

We exited through the east steel door into dusk. The van was parked on the street. Its passenger door stood open.

Beelzebubba was already outside, standing beside it.

BEELZEBUBBA Transportation awaits. One seat appears… unoccupied.

Cletus attempted to trot toward him. He took a neat step back.

JOE I locked that.

JUPITER It was locked.

Mr. Davenport walked to the van and peered inside. Empty. He wrapped his old book in a towel from the rear bench and placed it underneath.

Beelzebubba gave an exaggerated bow toward the open door, then collapsed into a small, localized cloud of infernal smoke. It dissipated into the cool air.

Cletus sniffed the pavement where he had vanished.

Mr. Davenport just stood there, keys in hand, staring at the church. I confirmed all my instruments read normal. The site was quiet.

He drove in silence. I watched the rearview mirror. Cletus lay across the floor behind the seats, facing backward.

JOE My book’s been marked. I thought it was an echo. A reflection. It wasn’t.

JUPITER The symbol wasn’t random. The doors unlocked in a sequence. Something was acknowledged.

JOE Acknowledged by what?

We didn’t speak the rest of the way back. The cut on my left forearm, the one from the house with the shifting stones, began to ache dully.

FIELD NOTES

Jupiter Meteor Nguyen – 2026-09-26

Shaffer Chapel A. M. E. Church, Muncie, Indiana. 2022 stained-glass installation, six panes. Alignment only coherent from the exact center of the nave aisle. Symbol: three-lobed, non-alphabetic. Migrated via reflected light onto the cover of Joe’s old paranormal book. Physical doors unlatched in sequence: east steel, basement west, basement east. Occupancy counter registered one additional thermal signature during event. No EMF or audio anomalies detected.

Beelzebubba present. Manifested visibly to Cletus. Joe could not perceive him.

Van door found open. No signs of forced entry. Lock mechanism functional upon inspection. Book now bears a faint embossing of the symbol, detectable by touch.

The symbol is persistent. The doors opened. Cause and relationship between events unexplained.
