This week’s book

Finding My Way: A Memoir

by Malala Yousafzai

A night full of Malala, catching up, and cookies we're still talking about

About this month’s book

In Finding My Way, Malala Yousafzai steps beyond the headlines to share the years the cameras never caught — new schools, hard exams, friendship, first love, and family expectation. It is a candid, funny, tender memoir about the slow, messy work of becoming yourself.

Book discussion

We Loved Finding My Way

We loved Finding My Way and learning more about Malala and her journey to becoming a woman.

There were so many topics to discuss and many circled back to The Lion Women of Tehran and A Woman is No Man and the culture these women are so suppressed by.

This is one of those rare books where there's so much to discuss that we did not talk about much else during our time together.

Book discussion

Taking Her Power Back

We were very happy to see how Malala took her power back and that she had friends who supported her but also called her out when it was warranted.

We were disappointed in her mother and the mindset drilled into her that women aren't supposed to be happy. (We did love the clothing she bought Malala for her wedding.)

Interesting that when the Taliban was invading Afghanistan, the only leaders who took some kind of action when she called them was the women. She feels that the men only used her for photo ops and to further their own political careers.

The very fine line she has to walk between being herself and bucking the stifling traditions but also remaining able to influence, help and promote education and empowerment for girls and women.

Mary Fran's 700+ Page Feat

I neglected to mention last month that Mary Fran read a 700+ page book ON HER OWN!

That's like two Mary Fran chosen books in one!

Odds and ends

Gen Alpha Lingo Watch

  • Mr. Lindsey is the teacher I follow who keeps me up to speed on the current Gen Alpha lingo. He's hilarious and I highly recommend his reels.

Word of the month

Choppelganger

The newest word I love is 'choppelganger' — which is a bad Temu version of a doppelganger.
