August pick: Cold Zero
Our book for August is Cold Zero by Brad Thor and Ward Larsen.
June's pick
We loved My Friends
We loved the book but didn't discuss very much about it because it's been a while and many books ago that some read it and couldn't recall much of the detail.
It was fresher for Nancy and I, so we agreed that we really appreciated how no one is truly “weird” or “other” — it's just that they haven't found their tribe yet.
From the discussion

Also discussed
The painting she went back for
We talked about art and how it can affect us personally.
Christine shared a lovely story about a painting she saw for sale that was at a place she had memories of a delightful lunch with her late husband.
She could not stop thinking about it and went back the next day to buy it and enjoys seeing it as much as she did when she bought it.
Author appreciation
The Backman list: all of them
We listed all the Fredrik Backman books we have fallen in love with. (Hint: all of them.)
Nancy reminded us that the show based on his book, Anxious People, is out. Here's a link to the trailer on YouTube. It's a fabulous show!
Recommendations
Too good to miss
I almost wrapped things up without asking about other books (what on earth was I thinking??) — Mary Fran and Christine set me straight right away because these books are too good to miss a chance to recommend to everyone else.
(One of them Mary Fran chose because Jeanette Not on a Tuesday gave it a good review on Goodreads and we know Jeanette has great taste in books.)
Mad Mabel
This looks like a really fun read!
Calamity Club
Mary Fran gives this one five stars for the snarky banter category.
Yesteryear
Oh boy, this one is about finding out what it's REALLY like to live the life you PRETEND to live on social media.
The Drowning Game
Thrilling and fast-paced look into the world of superyachts and murder.
The Foursome
This one is historical fiction based on a boldly original reimagining of an astonishing true story of two sisters in nineteenth-century North Carolina — Kline's own distant relatives — who married world-famous conjoined twins from Siam.
Other stuff we discussed
Facebook meets Goodreads
My cousin quit most all social media on her phone and has joined Fable, an app that she likens to Facebook meets Goodreads with more discussions.
If you're looking for a fun book-related app, this could be one for you. I plan to look into it this weekend.
Other stuff we discussed
Books for the homeless resource center
We brought books for Mary Fran to share with the homeless resource center where she volunteers. She's going to provide a list of things they always need in case we have anything to share.
Shoes is one thing I knew. Unexpectedly, plastic bags is another. They always need something to put things in when they provide things for the homeless.
Other stuff we discussed
Wig party, anyone?
There was more interest in the wigs I've been wearing than I ever expected, so we would like to have a “wig party” where those who are interested can come to my house and try on some wigs just for fun — because it IS a fun way to change up our look!
What month and days works best for those of you who would like to do this? This would be in addition to our regular monthly meetings. Would a Saturday or Sunday afternoon be better than an evening?
This is my collection… so far. 😂
Note these pictures are for the wig groups I'm in to see the styles on real people, health issues and all. They are not glamor shots by any stretch of the imagination.
Other stuff we discussed
Where to shop for wigs
If you'd like to try on some wigs on your own, Beauty Master is a big store with two locations in Orlando.
Beauty Source on Forest City Road is the only place I've been locally, but I had a blast!
There are lots of places locally, but to find them you have to google “beauty supply wigs” because they don't show up if you only search for “wigs” for some reason.
Wigs are universal despite the target audience for the different stores.
