Phones and dead animals

Well, circuit city had my phone. That's a lesson. If you see something on the circuit city website you want, buy it there and then go pick it up. Otherwise it might not actually be in the store. I wish I had known this back when I was trying to buy a wireless USB network adapter. The website said it was there, but when I arrived it was nary to be found. I even asked one fat disheveled employee who look like he had just left a 22-hour WOW marathon if there was any more to be found in the back. He shuffled around, peeked suspiciously at the empty peg, and then shrugged and said 'no'. Lesson learned.

Anyways, I am pleased with my new cheapo phone. My new cell phone number is (321) 262-8654 if anyone needs it for his or her records. Remember, I'm half deaf. It might turn into a shouting match.

One of my cats came trotting in last night with a dead squirrel in his mouth. I was mildly impressed. Squirrels are hard to catch. The cat relayed to me the terrific battle he went though to get that squirrel in dance form. He hooked a claw in the corpse and tossed it in the air and then leapt about and battered it back and forth like a game of cat hacky-sack. The squirrel itself leaped and jiggled around like the worlds most grotesque marionette puppet. It looked pretty floppy; the cat must have been playing with it all day.

Finally I chased the cat away form the corpse with a stick and gave the dead squirrelly an unceremonial burial in the bottom of my garbage can, shrouded in a cast off Wal-Mart bag. It's what it would have wanted. The cat itself was not upset I took it. I think he just assumes I eat the dead things he brings in.

Pointless fact: The girl who plays the pink-wigged girl from 'Lazy Town' was born in 1991. That makes her 15. The age of consent in Iceland, where the show is filmed, is 14. I'm just saying.

(Voice in the distance) Pervert!

I think the starter in my Saturn is starting to go bad. A couple of times I have turned the key and instead of the engine starting I was rewarded with a faint 'Whirl!' noise. I had this problem way back when I had my bus. For months I used to crawl under my bus and whack the starter with a hammer to loosen the solenoid. I am going to have to pick up a book on my Saturn. If its something not too hard, I'll do it myself. Otherwise I am going to dump it off at the shop.

I popped into the video store last night and snooped around. I found a used version of 'Lost season 2' for only 30 bucks so I decided to pick it up. Gives me something to veg out on. I figure I can easily sell it on ebay for the same price once I am done watching it. I also picked up a copy of 'Better off dead' Because Shallan claims to have never seen that movie, something I find shocking. She needs to be educated.

TWO DOLLARS!

I am not sure what is up for this weekend. I am sure I will find some trouble to get into.

2026 Update

Dialing back to when Ed posted his actual phone number and buried a squirrel in a Wal-Mart bag.

Ah, November 2006. You posted your phone number right there for anyone with a modem and a grudge to call, and your only defense was 'I'm half deaf.' Today we hand out our numbers like state secrets and still get robocalls from people pretending to be your car's warranty. Circuit City existed, and you learned the ancient lesson that a website's inventory is a lie—now the lie is 'in stock, ships in two days' and it arrives in a cardboard box the size of a coffin. You bought Lost season 2 on a shiny disc for thirty bucks and planned to flip it on eBay; now we pay three streaming services for the privilege of having it yanked when the license lapses. And the Saturn? You whacked a starter with a hammer. In 2026 the starter is buried under a plastic engine cover, and the diagnostic tool costs more than the car. At least the cat hasn't changed: it still brings you a corpse, but now you'd film it for the algorithm instead of giving it a Wal-Mart burial. Bless you, you magnificent disaster.

“2006 Ed, did you really think posting your real phone number was a good idea, or were you just hoping a stranger would call and shout about the dead squirrel while you whacked your Saturn's starter with a hammer?” — Beelzebubba the Third

2006 Ed: Well, Beelzebubba, I appreciate the concern, but honestly it never crossed my mind that it was a bad idea. I mean, it's just a phone number, not my social security card. If some stranger calls, we'll talk about the squirrel or the Saturn, whichever comes up first. And yeah, I'd probably shout, because I'm half deaf and the phone's always in the other room. The dead squirrel thing, that was a damn fine catch, I'll give the cat that. Squirrels are quick little bastards. As for the starter, I'm still debating whether to crawl under there with a hammer or just read the manual. If someone calls while I'm under the car, I'll tell them to hold on while I give the solenoid a good whack. That's the kind of service you get with this number. So no, I don't regret it. It's not like I'm giving out my address. Though if they want to bring a beer and watch me work, I won't say no.
