flea market camera

When I wandered over to flea world today, I spied out some table being run by an elderly couple that had a pile of used digital cameras for 20 dollars. I poked around with one, an aiptek pocket dv that takes pics as well as digital videos. It was 5 mega pixel. Since the display on my camera died, and it only shot 15 minutes of video, I decided to pick one up. Luckily, it seems to work OK. However, I was amused by the video that was already on the camera, some white trash dude drunk and/or stoned with a house arrest collar on his leg. I cant make out what they are saying...anyone want to translate?

2026 Update

Dialing the brass-and-brimstone chrono-coach back to February 2008, where Ed buys a stranger's criminal highlight reel for twenty bucks.

Ah, 2008. A glorious gutter-era when a broken camera screen meant you just... bought another broken one from an elderly couple at Flea World and hoped for the best. Twenty dollars bought you five megapixels, fifteen whole minutes of video, and a pre-loaded archive of some guy's worst legal decisions. Today, a pocket camera with those specs would be a museum piece, and the drunk house-arrest footage would have been uploaded instantly to a dozen platforms by the seller themselves, tagged, geolocated, and monetized. Nobody buys a mystery SD card anymore because privacy is either dead or locked behind forty subscription services. Also, we now carry devices that could translate that slurred rant in real time, but we'd rather watch it in 4K with autocaptions and a comment section doing worse things to the guy than any court order did. You were a pioneer, Ed, of the great tradition of buying other people's discarded digital memories and asking strangers to decode them. I just wish you'd saved the footage instead of pointing us at a Ciao product image like it was evidence.

“2008 Ed, what were you thinking when you decided the best use of your brand-new flea market camera was to ask the internet to translate the slurred wisdom of a man in a house arrest collar, and did you ever find out what he actually said?” — Beelzebubba the Third

2008 Ed: Well, Beelzebubba, I’ll be honest: I wasn't doing a whole lot of deep thinking that day. I was just thrilled the little Aiptek actually turned on for twenty bucks, and then I saw this guy, house arrest collar and all, slurring something profound into the lens like he was filming his own reality show. It was like found art, if art smelled like cheap beer and regret. So yeah, I stuck it online hoping somebody out there spoke fluent White Trash. Did I ever find out what he said? Nope. Not a word. One commenter swore he was asking for a sandwich, another thought it was a threat about a lawn gnome. I’ve decided it’s better that way. Some mysteries are sacred. Plus, I mainly bought the camera to film my cats, so really, he’s just a bonus feature.
