Hmm, I am itching to write but I really have nothing to say.
My absinthe arrived yesterday. It is all delightfully green. Now I am going to have to resist the urge to pop it open and sample some until I go to spring fest next month. I also got the spoon that came with it, although admitingly it is a really cheap spoon. It is hardly even concave. It looks like it was stamped out of a sheet of metal. But that is what I get for picking the cheapest spoon they have.
I swung by the farmers market on the way home to pick up some greens. It was raining out by then and the place was deserted except for a single Asian guy who looks sort of like the witchdoctor from ’conan’. I loaded up on stuff for salad and a beef stew I am making this weekend. They had a bunch of really nice looking cherry tomatoes, but I ended up not getting them. I have been working on getting my stomach acid under control and I have noticed that tomatoes are simply stomach acid bombs. So although I like a nice cherry tomato coming out of my salad with bits of fake bacon bits sticking to it and the delightful pop it makes in my mouth, its not worth sitting at my desk feeling miserable because I want a tums.
For some reason everything at the farmers market is cheaper except for the eggs. I am not sure what is up with that. By time he checked me out it was pouring out and I dashed out to my car yelping in the rain.
Only two more weeks until time changes, and I can really feel it. I have been waking up at dawn at then just laying in bed until it is time for me to get up because I loath having to get out of bed any earlier than I have to on a work day. I have been going to bed remarkably early as well. Last night after dinner I was reading my E-book and my eyes started drooping at 8:30. I was fast asleep by 8:45. I am looking forward to a little extra time after work.
Speaking of my E-book, I love the damn thing. I drag it everywhere. I have downloaded a library of almost a thousand scifi and fantasy books. I have enough to read for a year or two. So far the batter life on it has been great. I only plug it in to charge every few days, and the backlit light means that I can read it in my bed with the lights off. Maybe one day I’ll shell out for a fancy Amazon Kindle, but in the meantime I am perfectly happy with the one I have.
It’s Geeorge Washingtons birthday. He had red hair ya know.
2026 Update
Cranking the machine to 3/17/2008, where Ed hoards green absinthe and a thousand sci-fi books like a very boring dragon.
Oh, to be in 2008, when “e-book” meant a separate little brick you had to charge every few days, and you lovingly dragged it around like a Tamagotchi with a library card. Now the book, the brick, the internet, and your entire personality live in one slab of glass that watches you back, and “downloading a library” sounds like a dream from before the subscription era—now you just rent the right to read a cloud shelf until the bill lapses. Your farmers market was a rainy lot with one guy and cheap eggs; now every vegetable has a story, a tattoo, and a price tag that thinks it’s rent. And absinthe, once a dangerous green mystery, is about as rebellious as lavender lemonade, complete with a spoon that a woodworker charges seventy dollars for because it’s “artisanal.” The time change drama remains gloriously stupid, except now the clocks are mostly in devices that also nag you. You were a simple man with stomach acid and a cheap spoon, Ed. I almost respect it.
“2008 Ed, did you ever forgive yourself for passing up those cherry tomatoes because of stomach acid, and do you still think George Washington’s hair color was the most interesting thing about that day?” — Beelzebubba the Third
2008 Ed: Well, Beelzebubba, I still think about those cherry tomatoes every now and then, usually when I’m staring at a sad salad and wishing it had that little pop. But no, I haven’t forgiven myself, because forgiveness would mean I’ve moved on, and clearly I haven’t. Stomach acid is a cruel master, and I’m not about to sit at my desk clutching a Tums just for a moment of tomato joy. As for George Washington, his red hair is still the most interesting thing I learned that day, mostly because I spent the rest of the day realizing I know almost nothing about presidents. That’s droll, isn’t it? I had a whole day ahead of me, and the highlight was a dead guy’s hair color. So no, I haven’t changed my mind. Some mysteries are worth holding onto.
