Cellar wives are what happens to women when crazy lonely men who often spend time on myspace kidnap them. The kidnapped women are brought down into a dark cellar and chained to the wall. They often have a small dingy bed, a pot to piss in, and an old battered television that plays either 'Oprah' or static. Periodically cellar wives are brought food by their captive, raped, or cringe in horror as their kidnappers curl up into little balls on the floor in front of them and cry. Cellar wives are reminded several times a day just how much their captors love them, and their captors are always baffled when the cellar wives do not seem to love them back. Cellar wives get long speeches about how they are better off being in the cellar, that it is for their own good, and that their captor is actually smarter than them and knows what is best for their cellar wives.
Cellar wives often known their captors long before they become cellar wives. They might have even gone on a few dates. But once they start to get creeped out by the too-wide smile, the constant lip-licking, and the long rambling philosophical discussions or conspiracy rants, they stop seeing the guy. A short stalking period then takes place. This is known as 'Cellar wife courting'. Aside from the run of the mill hiding in the bushes and sneaking in to steal panties, there will also be inconvenient 'accidental' chance meetings. Such as showing up during a woman's date and loudly displaying their hurt and outrage that they were seeing another man.
Late night screaming and pounding on a woman's door usually signals the end of a cellar wife courtship and the nuptials will soon begin.

Once in a great while a cellar wife manages to escape and to even kill their captor, but most of the time their captor forgets about their wives for a little while and the wives end up dying of either dehydration or hunger. Then the captor comes down and looks in horror at the dead cellar wife and decides to go on treating her as if she was living for a few more weeks. Once the smell gets too bad he will bury her in the back yard and then go on Myspace to search for a new cellar wife.
There you have it. Cellar Wives.
2026 Update
Dialing to August 2006, when Ed invents a dating-horror lexicon no one asked for.
Ah, 2006. The age of Myspace, crt televisions, and a man writing a gleeful little dictionary entry about women being chained up in cellars. Twenty years later, we don't say "cellar wife"—we say "true crime podcast episode," and we listen to it while scrolling dating apps on phones that could record the whole ordeal in 4K. The too-wide smile and lip-licking are still out there, but now they show up as voice notes and "hey u up" texts at 2 a.m. Oprah and static have been replaced by a streaming service that asks if you're still watching while you're emotionally spiraling at 3 a.m. And the captor's baffled speeches about love and being smarter than his victim? That cliché now has a name—"gaslighting"—and a thousand TikTok therapists explaining it. I appreciate Ed documenting this nightmare as an urban legend, but the whole post reads like he half-wants to be the protagonist. The internet was a wilder, dumber place back then, and this is exactly the sort of artifact I keep in my museum of terrible decisions.
“2006 Ed, did you actually know anyone like this, or were you just trying to sound like a dark folklorist while describing something that should have been a police report?” — Beelzebubba the Third
2006 Ed: Well, Beelzebubba, I don’t actually know anyone like that, thank God, and I sure hope I never do. I was mostly trying to be a dark folklorist, or at least the world’s grimmest MySpace-era Grimm brother. But you’re right—this should have been a police report, not a blog post with a weird animated gif. I’ve known a couple of guys with the too-wide smile and the long rants, and I’ve heard stories that gave me the heebie-jeebies, but nobody I knew got chained to a wall. I think I was working out a fear, you know? There was something in the news and it just lodged in my head and came out as some nasty little fairy tale. Maybe it’s my way of saying: watch out for the lip-lickers of the world. I’ll try to file a report next time instead of being droll. Take that, foul cellar.
