dreamwriter and luck

Some people believe lady luck favors some people and ignores others.
I firmly disagree with this idea.
Instead, I see lady luck as a figure in a robe with a sword, running around and cutting the strings of good luck on people. The people that some of us consider ‘lucky’ are simply the ones that have managed to hide form her wrath. Not me however, whenever she puts on her monocle and peers down at the earth, I am the first one she sees.
(yes I am insane)
Anyways, this is also the reason I do not gamble. My dreamwriter came in last night. It turned out to be larger than I expected, however I was pleased to see that it has 2 pcmcia ports, so I will be able to put in a hard drive as well as a wireless network card. Sweet.
Now, I knew the unit was not coming with a power supply, but I figured I could just run down to radio shack and pick up a new one. However, When I arrived with the unit in hand, the resident moron/salesperson could not find a plug to fit it. The CD socket was some weird proprietary plug that probably was made especially for this machine. Since I wanted to play
with that unit that night, I instead bought a different female DC jack, opened the machine, drilled a hole in it, and soldered it into place.
Now, here came the luck part.. I had no idea which part of the jack was the positive terminal and which was the negative. So I had a 50/50 chance. Taking a guess, I set the wires and plugged the unit into the wall.
I was rewarded with a loud POP and the smell of burning components.
It figures.
Thinking I killed the unit, I reversed the polarity and plugged it in again. To my amazement, the unit booted up fine. I plugged it into my cable modem and I was happily playing with pocket explorer. However, SOMETHING in there is burned out, and now I am going to have a fun time trying to figure out what part of the machine no longer works. For instance, I had the battery pack plugged in all night, but it did not take a charge. Does this mean the battery pack is dead, or did I blow out the charging unit?
Anyways, it’s a neat machine and today I am going to try and get a wireless card working on it.
