I should be doing some more work, but I am loafing a bit, thinking about the stuff I have to do when I get home.
The other night I watched the new 2003 version of 'peter pan'. It was pretty good, although it was the first peter pan movie I had seen where the girl watches peter pan throughout the movie with an unabashed look of sexual hunger on her face. It was alarming at first, however it made the store of peter pan make a little more sense.
Peter Pan really is a bit of a dark tale. First you have peter pan who was snatched away as a baby by a fairy. I am convinced that neverland did not exist before peter pan was captured by the fairies and its very existence was defined by Pan's mind and brought into tangible being through the fairy magic.
Then you have captain hook and his band of pirates. I believe that captain hook was not a creation of Pans mind, but was an actual pirate. My theory is that he and his entire crew had actually died, however on their way to hell they were invertedly (or purposely) marooned in neverland to be used as Pan's (and thus the fairies) plaything.
Now, there are
only two ways for Hook to break free of neverland. The first is his preferred method, which is to kill Pan. Killing pan will not destroy neverland, at least not immediately, and Hook might actually be able to go back to the 'real' world. Or at least be able to break free from the fairy magic.
The other method is if Pan reaches sexual maturity. If pan is to 'grow up' and thus lose his boyish imagination that the fairies use to shape neverland, neverland will not only cease to exist, but would have never existed in the first place, in which case Hook would have continued his journey to hell.
Thus the presence of the girl on the island of neverland became hooks greatest fear. Before all he had to be worried about was to be forever caught in the neverland limbo, but the coming of the girl posed a newer and graver danger.
Sure enough, she ends up kissing Pan. Pan may not actually reach full sexual maturity, at least not enough to cease the existence of neverland, however it was enough to cause Hook to break away and continue on his journey to hell. (via the throat of the big crocodile)
Anyways, thats my opinion.
